Kibaki calls for peace in Sudan

President Mwai Kibaki has called for the full implementation of the comprehensive peace agreement in Southern Sudan as per the agreement signed early this year. Kibaki was speaking at State House Nairobi Thursday when he held talks with President of the Government of Southern Sudan and First Vice President of the Government of National Unity of Sudan Lt. Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit who paid him a courtesy call. President Kibaki said Kenya was willing to continue assisting the Sudanese peace process within the framework of the peace agreement signed in January. The Sudanese Vice President who was on his way home from the U.S.A briefed President Kibaki on his visit to the U.S. Lt. Gen Mayardit also informed President Kibaki about the formation of two commissions in his country, the national petroleum commission to oversee the distribution of revenue from the sale of oil and the assessment and evaluation commission composed of members of Inter governmental authority on development (IGAD) chaired by Norway with Kenya deputizing. The Sudanese Vice-President said there was need for the speedy establishment of the joint defence board to oversee the integration of the S.P.L.A. and the Sudan Armed forces, 12,000 troops either side. He further sought Kenya's assistance in developing basic services in water, education and infrastructure in southern Sudan, noting that his government was beginning from scratch.
